What to make of the incident last week, involving Harvard's Professor Gates and the Cambridge Police, is kind of puzzling as to what actually happened at Gate's home, which is one block from Harvard Square.
From what I read and heard, was that the professor was just getting home from a long trip overseas. He had a hard time getting into his house, as he could not find his key(s). So far, all well and good. Then there was a call made to the Cambridge Police, that two black men, were trying to break into a house. Moments later, police arrive, lo and behold, the fun begins.
Once they got inside the house, which they managed to jimmy the door open Gate's produced is ID, and then an argument ensued between the professor and one of the officers who was white. The next thing you know, Gate's is put under arrest, charged and booked at the police station. He was finger printed, a mug shot taken, which in a very short time went virile across the internet. Gates was released and the next day, the charges are dropped. Gate's demanded an apology, but never got one from the arresting officer. Fat chance of that happening, as police officers rarely ever give an apology, as they think it is beneath them.
It gets even better. During Wednesday night's press conference, (July 21, '09) President Obama was asked what he thought of the incident, involving the professor and the police, by a reporter from the Chicago Sun Times. To make it short, he said "That it was unfortunate incident, that should never have happened." By the way, the professor and the president are good friends.
This morning. the arresting officer said that Obama called him stupid, for arresting Gates, when in fact the president said, "They were acting stupidly" what the Cambridge Police did." I watched the press conference, and that is what Obama said. But this cop said claims that the president singled him out, which he did not do, but the department as a whole. The officer also says he will not apologize to Gates, and thats his choice. The police department said they regretted that this incident ever happened. That should be the end of it.
Be assured this will not be the end of what happened in Cambridge, and rest assured, things like this will happen again and again. In a civilized society, there is no time or place for this.
